Wait, Why Is ‘Fortnite’ Having A Batman Event Now?

I’ve previously talked about how Fortnite’s crossover events are getting stranger and stranger. We recently saw Epic putting an actual area from another game into their own game for a Borderlands 3 crossover, which made some amount of sense given its high profile placement on the Epic store. Then there was a tease for an IT: Chapter 2 event that didn’t even arrive at all, and was instead what appeared to just be an easter egg.

Now? We’re having a Batman event, complete with batarangs, grappling hooks, Bat signals on the map and a Batman skin. Oh and all of Gotham City is arriving and replacing Tilted Town.

No, you haven’t missed any news. There is no surprise Batman movie about to be released, and this is not a crossover with the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie (which does not have Batman in it). Gotham on FOX is over. There’s no animated series reboot. Bruce Wayne has just shown up on DC Universe’s Titans, but that’s not what this is about.

This is just…Fortnite X Batman, for…reasons.

The best I can figure is that September 21 is “Batman Day” which is apparently a real thing that celebrates the heroes’ first appearance. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the character, so I have to assume that despite there being no active Batman project about to come out (the Robert Pattinson movie is still very far away), here we are.

My guess is that Warner Bros. didn’t want to miss out on all the action that Fortnite was getting with Marvel, even with no Batman movies about to arrive. We had Fortnite Marvel crossover events for both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which resulted in a limited time mode with Thanos and official Marvel skins of Black Widow and Star Lord.

And now…Batman.

I have joked that Fortnite is becoming the Super Smash Bros. of pop culture with these endless crossover deals, and now we literally have a game where Batman can slug it out with Black Widow in a Marvel versus DC fight in a game that neither of them own. A reminder of the full list of licensed characters we now have because of these deals:

  • Black Widow
  • Star Lord
  • John Wick
  • A Demigorgon from Stranger Things
  • Hopper from Stranger Things
  • A Psycho from Borderlands
  • An assortment of NFL players
  • Now Batman, and possibly the Joker.

The Batman deal is noteworthy because it’s not even promoting anything, it’s just the general concept of Batman near his anniversary because WB and DC don’t want to be left out of the biggest game in the world. I do wonder if there’s any limit to the amount of crossovers we’re going to see here. I have to assume that Star Wars skins are absolutely in the cards for Episode 9’s release, and after that? Who knows. We might have a full JLA and Avengers roster at some point, throw some X-Men in there. Some Watchmen. Lara Croft. Master Chief. Ash Ketchum, whatever man, just go wild.

    What a strange game.
